Brooks Tennis League was formed more than 35 years ago as a result of keen interest in weekly and scheduled league tennis match play in the Clear Lake area. A group of tennis players in the Middlebrook, Brookforest and surrounding sub divisions in Clear Lake had decided to get together to play tennis on Tuesday nights on a weekly basis. Today, the league is over 36 gentlemen strong is better than ever. It is well organized and run and the quality of the players just keeps getting better. There is a Spring and Fall session every year, each session lasting 18 weeks which allows for seasonal holidays as well as unforeseen weather delays. There is a well organized and coordinated league schedule put out every session that promotes fun and competitive tennis.
Contact John Quinlan, the Commissioner if you're interested in joining the league.
History of the League
According to Jim Schornick the league began approximately sometime before 1976. A woman by the name of Pat was asked to organize the league as she had past experience in organizing previous tennis leagues for women. She put together a roster and a schedule.
The entire west side of the Brook Forest and Middlebrooks subdivisions were not yet built and a plywood court was built near the area of the cul-de-sac in the Brook Forest subdivision, according to Don Bane. Not to be out done, Middle Brook subdivision built four courts also made of plywood, according to Glen Houston, Don Bane and Dave Pitts who agreed. Must have been a riot after the traditional Tuesday night rains.
As the west side of the Bayou developed Jim Schornick and a British chap named Bill Bennett organized "A" flight and "B" flight leagues with the " A" league being the better players than the "B" league. The "A" league played at Mesa Verde, directed by Jim Schornick and the "B" league at the pool court, directed by Bill Bennett. They played on different nights.
Nick Lance took over in the mid-1980s, when Bill Bennett died. Nick moved up to A league and Dave Pitts ran the B league. It is not clear when the two leagues combined. Four players were in the league at that time; Don Bane, Glen Houston, Joe Bryan and Dale Muehlenbrock that are presently in the league.
Dave Pitts handed the league to Dale Muehlenbrock. There were 20 players in the league at that time. Dale handed over the league to Bill Shippey and 12 or 13 years ago Bill handed over the league to his treasurer Tony Purvis, our Commissioner Emeritus. in 2014, Tony passed the tennis racquet to John Quinlan, the newest in a distinguished line of league commissioners.
There are presently thirty six regular players in the league and rumors of expansion to a total of forty two players is being heard.
